Our new submissions theme is “Empathy,” defined as the action of being aware, understanding, and being sensitive to, as well as vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of another especially in times of grief, sadness, pain, or difficulty by another human being whether someone we know or a stranger. We often think of empathy as a natural ability to share and understand each other's experiences like a hard-wired trait, but it's more like a skill. This means that with the right experiences, habits and practice, we can increase our empathic capacity towards another person.

Sometimes, empathy and sympathy are used interchangeably but know that there is a subtle difference between them. Though they both refer to a caring response to the emotional state of another person, there is a distinction between them. While sympathy is a feeling of sincere concern for someone who is experiencing something difficult or painful, empathy involves actively sharing in the emotional experience of the other person. Read all about the heartfelt articles in this issue from women around the world. Learn about their thoughts and experiences about this edition’s theme and with the wisdom you will gain, may empathy become the gentle cure for the ever impersonal and selfish worldview so prevalent out there in a secular world that needs caring people more than ever.
